Consultation has concluded

Sidewalks on the west side of Wharf Ave between Dolphin and Cowrie are getting updated! Improvements to include a new sidewalk, streetlights, storm infrastructure, parallel parking and plaza space for local businesses. All businesses will be open during construction, and sidewalk access will be maintained.

Completion of construction is expected by mid-June, 2022. All efforts will be taken to achieve this target date to have construction completed before the end of the school year/tourist season.

Parking & Traffic

Alternative parking may be found at Acacia Park public parking, Dolphin Ave, and Periwinkle Lane during construction. Please use caution when driving, wheeling or walking in the area obey the directions of flaggers.

Message boards will be installed to keep the public up to date. Traffic detours may be required at limited times during construction, but every effort will be made to minimize any inconvenience to the public.

Preservation

Initial archeological investigation along west side of Wharf Ave has encountered an archeological sensitive site and has temporarily halted construction. The District's archeological consultant is currently working with the Provincial Government for the appropriate permits. Construction is expected to resume early April, 2022.

Funding

This $600,000 project is funded through a combination of Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Active Transportation grant, Island Costal Economic Trust grant, and The Canada Community-Building Fund.
