The photo above highlights one of the main reasons as to why the culvert has now failed. The culvert, created about 40 years ago, was backfilled with contaminated organic material that did not compact. At this site, the road was filled with approximately 1 meter of asphalt, added in layers each time a dip in the road occurred. Now that's a lot of asphalt and a lot of weight! The things you discover when you dig a bit deeper.
