This Sports Field Strategy will assess current and future demands and trends to ensure the needs of our growing population and the community’s access to sports, continue to be met. The strategy will define the long-term vision and will provide recommendations to guide sports field management, allocation, and capital/operational investments over the next 10 years.
The District of Sechelt, Sunshine Coast Regional District, the Town of Gibsons, the shíshálh Nation, and School District 46 have teamed up to develop an overall strategy for sports fields on the Sunshine Coast.
We know sports fields support fitness, connection, and fun for people of all ages and abilities on the Sunshine Coast. There's a shared commitment to collaborate on sports field service delivery, including water use management and other sustainability practices, and fostering diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. As the population grows, ensuring fair access and sustainable management of these outdoor recreation amenities is more important than ever.

Phases
The project will be developed over three phases.
Phase 1 - Background
April to July: This phase of the project includes discussions with staff, background research, review of existing policies and other documents providing strategic guidance, documenting the inventory of sports fields, and completing supply/demand analysis. We will also be comparing the supply and standards to best practices and other jurisdictions.
Phase 2 - Engagement
June to July: Running concurrently with Phase 1, we will be engaging with sports field user groups and other key stakeholders, as well as gathering input from the broader community through a public survey. The purpose is to gain a better understanding of how organizations and the public use sports fields and to learn about what is currently working and what could be improved.
Phase 3 - Strategy
July - October: Using information from the first two phases, a sports field strategy will be developed. The strategy will include a vision statement, guiding principles, recommendations and an implementation plan.
