Consultation has concluded
Jane Bowers Dog is officially open! The park opened June 19th to a crowd of about 50 people and their pets. “Approximately 75 letters later, and we had a clear picture of a person whose history, advocacy and dedication to animals - namely dogs - is unparalleled,” said Darnelda Siegers, Mayor of Sechelt, commenting about the letters Council received from community members. The Ebbtide Dog Park at Trail Ave and Ebbtide will be Sechelt’s only fully fenced designated off-leash dog park; the need for a designated off-leash dog park was identified in the 2018 Parks and Open Spaces Master Plan. The project was funded through Capital Reserves and Development Cost Charges with $100,000 allocated for the project and is on budget.
The approximately 1 acre site was previously used as a District of Sechelt works yard for the Public Works and Parks department, and in late 2019 work began by staff to remove asphalt, concrete, and old site furnishings. Hazardous trees were removed, and the area was landscaped and seeded for new lawns. Fencing was partially installed with archeologists monitoring the digging of all fence posts and screening for artifacts.
The park was designed with features including: a small dog area, a double gate system for entering and exiting the park, an open area for play as well as a wooded area providing shady space and quiet areas for people and dogs to sit.
New trees were installed, and the wooded area was graded and woodchips brought in.
A new water service and a drainage connection to the storm sewer system were installed during the road works taking place on Ebbtide Street.
Site furnishings have been purchased including a water fountain with drinking bowl for dogs, garbage cans, doggy bag dispensers, picnic tables and benches
The Rotary Club of the Sunshine Coast has begun fundraising for a shelter for visitors.
